Katy Perry - bigger & better than Lady Gaga?

Last week Lady Gaga and Katy Perry went head-to-head with new video clips. As recently as last year, this would have been a cake walk. Mother Monster would be using her rival's wig as a merkin, while Katy cried on the phone to Russell. But a lot has changed since then. Despite the unprecedented tidal wave of hype and promotion surrounding "Born This Way", "Teenage Dream" is the album churning out the hits. It's not like Lady Gaga is doing poorly - her last three singles have reached the top ten in America - but Ms Perry is gunning for her fifth consecutive US #1. And with the amazing "Last Friday Night (TGIF)" currently occupying the top spot on US iTunes - she has a very real shot of pulling it off. To put things into perspective, the so called biggest star on the planet has only managed three in her entire career.

No doubt Monsters will point to Gaga's album sales. "Born This Way" is almost equal with "Teenage Dream" on that front after less than a month. But we all know those figures were seriously inflated by the 99 cent Amazon deal and, given its rapid decline in sales ever since, Katy would probably have her there too. After all, Lady Gaga is already on her third single and, with the exception of "Hair" or perhaps "You & I", she's all out of potential radio hits. In the past you could legitimately argue that Mother Monster was at least untouchable as the new queen of music videos but Katy has stolen that crown too. "ET" is everything "Born This Way" wanted to be - stylish, cohesive and clever - and the reported $10 million dollars that Gaga spent on "Judas" is the biggest waste of money since "Waterworld".

That leaves us with their current videos. Katy's "Last Friday Night (TGIF)" is a joyous 8 minute extravaganza that plays like a 80s sitcom. Kathy Beth Terry, the pop star's alter ego in the clip, is an awkward teenager who crashes her neighbour's party. Not only is said neighbour internet sensation Rebecca Black but the video is also jam packed with celebrities ranging from Kenny G to Debbie Gibson and a bunch of nobodies from Glee. It's completely ridiculous but I love every second of it and the trashy extravaganza has already racked up 22 million views on YouTube. Meanwhile, Lady Gaga dances on a fire escape in her clip. That is literally it. If nothing else it can be marketed as a cure for insomnia. I'm not blaming her for pulling back and doing something less extravagant but "Edge Of Glory" deserved a majestic clip. I envisaged cliffs, angels and an eerie death scene. Not some shitty stripper busting a move on a staircase. Next!

Anyway, you decide. Here are their the videos. Is Katy Perry now the biggest name in pop music or is this just a temporary blip in Lady Gaga's march to greatness?

Miss Kelly's revenge

After living in Beyoncé's shadow for the past 15 years, Kelly Rowland has emerged from the darkness with a freshly snatched House of Dereon wig in her back pocket. Miss Kelly is now the most successful child of destiny as her new single "Motivation" tops the US urban airplay chart this week and climbs to a new peak of number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100. I'm so happy for her! When "Commander" flopped, I honestly thought Kelly's time had passed. That song was so perfect and should have been her moment to shine. Unfortunately, it wasn't to be but the stars have finally aligned for the hardest working diva in the game. And with probably the least commercial song of her career.

Don't get me wrong, "Motivation" is a smokin' hot tune but Bey's childhood friend was having no luck with the urban crowd. "Grown Ass Woman" and "Rose Coloured Glasses" were chart disasters of Ashanti-sized proportions. The dancefloor appeared to be her only salvation but Miss Kelly had other ideas. "Motivation" is like an old school 90s slow jam on steroids. It's so sleek and sexy. I can't even play it in the car when I have company because the lyrics make me blush! Kelly is basically the heterosexual equivalent of a bossy bottom in the song, telling her man where and how she wants it. Whatever happened to biting the pillow and getting on with it so you can be finished in time for Chelsea Lately? But I digress. "Motivation" is amazing and I hope K Row remembers to throw Bey a bone when she takes over the DC throne. Congrats!

Shontelle - Say Hello To Goodbye

Shontelle has to be one of the most underrated women in pop. Her album was great (ready my review here) but "No Gravity" could only manage one week in the top 100 before plummeting faster than "Run The World (Girls)". I thought she had cut her losses and moved on to album number number three but the rich man's Rihanna had other plans. Shontelle is pushing "Say Hello To Goodbye" to pop radio in America and, so far, it seems to be working. The track is already top 40 on pop airplay and should get a good push from the classy video (below), which was released on Friday. It's a pretty simple affair. Basically, Shon looks all depressed and goes on the trainride from hell where she's haunted by memories of her ex-boyfriend. I think I've taken that ride. On the bright side, the diva's stylist has stopped playing jokes on her and there are none of the trannylicious outfits that made "Licky" such an iconic (for all the wrong reasons) mess. I have to admit that it took my a while to warm to this lovely ballad - I was too busy stanning for "Love Shop" - but it's a grower and will hopefully repeat the worldwide success of "Impossible". Don't waste your time on rubbish like "California King Bed" when you could be listening to a real tearjerker like this instead!

Wynter Gordon - Album Sampler Review

Earlier a today I wrote an article for Sydney Star Observer about the impending release of Wynter Gordon's debut album and wrote that it "promises to be one of the party albums of the year". Well, I need to buy some tarot cards and set up a stall in Newtown because my predication was spot on. A six track sampler of "With The Music I Die" arrived in my inbox this evening and I'm absolutely stunned. I knew the album was going to be good but my future beard has delivered half a dozen of the hottest dance-pop songs I've heard in a very long time. Even if the rest of the album is awful - which it won't be - Australia's adopted club queen has already snatched every wig in town. Poor J Lo must be so pressed that Wynter kept all the good shit for herself! Here is the full "With The Music I Die" tracklist and my initial comments about the tracks I've heard:

    Til Death

The album's punchy second single has been lodged in the iTunes top 20 since release and looks set to climb into the top 10 when Wynter returns to Australia for a promo tour in June. It's a great pop song and scarily, still grows on me with each listen !

    Dirty Talk

This shit is undeniable. The highest selling single in Australia for the first quarter of 2011 is now catching on around the world. Absolutely defining. Now somebody please put the original naughty school girl video back on YouTube. That hot mess is what made me fall in love with my flawless boo in the first place!

    Don’t Stop Me

I love this. An effortlessly cool club anthem with an icy edge that I'd usually associate with Robyn or Roisin Murphy - if someone threw a pill down their throat and pushed them on the dancefloor. My favourite part is when Wynter coos "I can melt your heart, you'll be all mine". That and the sassy countdown at the end. Perhaps not single material but great nonetheless.

    Buy My Love

Gold diggers have a new theme song! "Buy My Love" is so cute and catchy - definitely a good choice for single number three. It's more electro than we're used to from the diva but there's still something quite camp and 80s about the track. I love the lyrics ("Let's take a quick vacation, a little shopping spree - a fancy destination, we'll spend it all on me!") and adorable chorus. I can definitely hear this on the radio.

    Still Getting Younger

Was I more high than usual or did Wynter tweet that this was the next single? If the sticker on the album cover is any indication, it looks like Neon is going with the fabulous "Buy My Love" but I think I prefer this glorious explosion of dreamy synths. Even if it is slightly less commercial. "Still Getting Younger" isn't an ode to Madonna's plastic surgery but a soft and pretty dance-pop love song. It actually reminds me a little of Kylie's "Tightrope" (my favourite "Fever" era track) with a bit of 80s Moroder thrown in for good measure. The lyrics are gorgeous too - "I'm not lonely, I just need you. You're this empty space I got." Simply beautiful.

    Drunk On Your Love

    Unheard.

    All My Life

    Unheard.

    Rumba [feat. Kevin McCall]

    Unheard.

    Back To You

Now this is very different for Wynter. It's a moody mid-tempo electronic groove with amazing lyrics like "you don't know that when I lie in bed I touch myself to you" and "I took you for granted, I spit in your face". It's an atmospheric and multi-layered little gem that no doubt will worm its way further into my consciousness with each listen. Fabulous.

In The Morning [feat. Robbie Rivera]

    Unheard.

I'm so curious about the other tracks now. If they are of a similar standard, Wynter will have one of the best albums of 2011 on her hands. "With The Music I Die" is released in Australia on June 17. I'm pre-ordering my copy today. Here's her current hit "Til Death". Someone really needs to mash it with "Til The World Ends" to create a truly morbid floorfiller!

Born This Way - Album Review

I usually don't feel the need to justify myself before writing a review but I have been taking the piss out of Lady Gaga rather frequently around here due to her sticky fingers, so I thought I'd start by bringing your attention to this link. It's my 2009 'best of' countdown. As you can see, I ranked "The Fame Monster" the second best album of that year and hailed it "the new measuring stick for dance-pop". And I still stand by that. When Lady Gaga is making solid pop music without desperately trying to be outrageous or groundbreaking, she is almost unbeatable. Like a demented cross between Madonna, Britney and someone with actual talent - she lifts pop to dark and dangerous new heights. Take "Bad Romance". To this day that song gives me chills. Strip away the "rah rah rahs" and you're left with one of the most honest 'Dear John' letters ever committed to music.

I guess that's half the reason the beginning of the new era has irked me so much - it's all image and hype. Lady Gaga can talk about tackling the big issues until the pointy implants in her face explode but nothing she has released since "Dance In The Dark" - her last great single - has connected with me at all. Happily, there is a lot to like about "Born This Way" when you dig beneath the unnecessary trappings but it doesn't change the fact that the album crumbles under the weight of her own ego. Mother monster needs to stop advocating for minorities that (she mistakenly believes) imbue her with credibility and put together a cohesive album. She's so busy trying to prove she can do everything that she ends up doing very little right. One minute the most powerful woman in pop is bringing back 90s house, then reviving disco, before moving on to 80s soft rock and the industrial rave scene. Her fans call it eclectic and Lady Gaga herself has gushed that this is the album she has always wanted to make. I'm sorry bitch but that doesn't make it good. Just unforgivably self-indulgent. At its worst, "Born This Way" sounds like the soundtrack to a beginner's party at the Hellfire club. At its best, the album reminds me of a mixtape my mum might have made back in 1987 with heavy lashings of Starship, Laura Branigan and Foreigner! It's no masterpiece but definitely salvageable. Here is my track by track review below:

    Marry The Night

This is the song Lady Gaga premiered on Facebook application Farmville. I'm guessing people who tend to imaginary sheep don't hit up the club all that often but whatever. "Marry The Night" is a rather inoffensive if somewhat stillborn opener. Which is surprising because I love Fernando Garibay and he usually brings the best out of Gaga. The explosive introduction is exciting and raised my expectations until the song changes pace and becomes a rather strange mish-mash of 80s Bruce Springsteen and bad 90s techno. It definitely has its moments and has grown on me immensely but the track lacks the catchy hook that Lady Gaga usually does better than anyone.

    Born This Way

I've already said enough about this heinous mess. "Born This Way" makes me ashamed to be gay. If we've reached the point where we need a middle-class, heterosexual attention seeker who looks like a 47-year-old transvestite to advocate on our behalf with the supposedly uplifting message that we're all freaks but still deserve love and acceptance then I'm out. There is nothing joyous or inclusive about the lyrics and Gaga can deny ripping off "Enjoy Yourself" all she likes but the similarities are undeniable. Everything about this makes my skin crawl.

    Government Hooker

Yuck. If any song sums up what is wrong with Lady Gaga circa 2011 then this is it. "Government Hooker" is the most pretentious song you will hear all year. From the pointless lyrics to messy production, this is one big cry for attention. I could probably cope with an instrumental because there are some interesting flourishes but what exactly is the point of this? To prove that Gaga is cool and edgy and can write lyrics about sex workers and dead presidents? Bitch, please go back to riding that disco stick and leave the faux intellectualism to someone with more to say. I will give her credit for the high camp operatic intro though.

    Judas

The fame monster's unauthorised remake of Loli Lux's stunning "WannaBE" is the biggest flop of her career. And for a while looked like it would derail the incredible momentum she had built over the past two years. The problem is that "Judas" is a massive step backwards. It's a fairly standard RedOne production that sticks to the tried and tested "Bad Romance" formula without bringing anything new or fresh to the table. Even the religious imagery that pervades the lyrics in getting boring. Madonna and the Pet Shop Boys did this shtick better in the 80s - it's not shocking, just lazy and boring. And then there's the chorus that sounds like the worst song Aqua never released. Having listened to the rest of the album, Gaga must have been smoking crack when she chose this as the second single. There are so many better songs on "Born This Way".

    Americano

By this point I was lamenting the death of my love affair with Lady Gaga. I thought the time had come to throw my paws into the air one last time and leave the monsterhood for good. "Americano" is so fucking lame it needs a walking stick. A sad re-imagining of "Alejandro" that combines Mariachi music with bad Euro-disco, the track apparently tackles heady issue of illegal immigration. It's as hideous as it sounds. If the prospect of a white woman singing chunks of a song in bad Spanish before breaking into the occasional burst of "la la la" then this is for you. If not, do your ears a favour and press delete. This is the worst song Fernando Garibay has ever put his name to. Shame.

    Hair

Just when I was ready to write of "Born This Way" as a total trainwreck, along came "Hair" and instantly revived my interest in the project. One of the many buzz singles released to promote the album pre-release, this got lost in the circle jerk over "The Edge Of Glory" but I think it's every bit as good. Although not quite as amazing as Ashley Tisdale's genre-defining song of the same name. But back to Gaga. This is just a solid, I am who I am pop song that I can imagine Cydni Lauper belting out in the 80s. It's fun, catchy and genuinely uplifting. RedOne is such a strange producer. He's done more for recycling that Planet Ark but occasionally he pulls one out of the bag and I love this odd hybrid of 80s Starship-esque pop and dance elements. Great use of sax too. This has to be a single.

    Scheiße

As it turns out, Lady Gaga - I can speak German and your pathetic attempt at butchering my mother tongue in a bizarre bid for Teutonic chic is an epic fail. It doesn't even make sense. Is this some kind of anthem for scat lovers or just a lame attempt to revive late 90s house? Whatever the case may be the title accurately describes the song. This is shit.

    Bloody Mary

The dubiously talented DJ behind "Government Hooker" returns for "Bloody Mary" - a song that has been singled out by many critics as one of the album's highlights and a future single. I'm not that enthusiastic about it but it is definitely one of the most straightforward floorfillers on "Born This Way". It's like a less intense but more authentic "Judas". The lyrics are less ambitious but they work and there's something hypnotic about the simple chorus. Not great but not bad at all. And if the rumours about this becoming a single I implore Lady Gaga not to ruin it by sitting on a crucifix shaped dildo in the video. Because we all know that's the moment she's been waiting for her whole life.

    Bad Kids

"Bad Kids" is everything I want from Mother Monster - a fun pop song with a catchy chorus and universal lyrics. This encapsulates the sentiment I think Lady Gaga wanted to say with "Born This Way" until her pretentious streak got in the way. "I'm not that cool and you hate me, I'm a bad kid that's the way that they made" sings the diva against the crispest 80s beats to hit the airwaves since the glory days of Stacey Q. Who didn't feel like that as a teenager? There's something organically anthemic about "Bad Kids" that makes it a standout on the album. I know that Lady Gaga likes to sing about being shunned and different but more often than not it strikes me as a marketing exercise. This, however, no doubt comes from a time in her past when she was just a mannish teenager called Stefani. Credit must go to producer Jeppe Laursen (of Junior Senior) for bringing the diva back down to earth.

    Highway Unicorn (Road to Love)

This has singled out by some critics as the worst song on "Born This Way" but I kind of like its 80s hair band on acid sound palette. Sure, the lyrics are completely inane but I love the hands in the air chorus and I can imagine singing along to this in the car. As long as I was sure no one was listening. The production meanders and it's generally a bit of a mess but I find this kind of good natured experimentation a lot more forgivable than something like "Government Hooker" or "Scheiße".

    Heavy Metal Lover

"I want your whiskey mouth all over my blond south" is the worst lyric of the year. I'm sorry but a song about eating Lady Gaga's pussy was always going to leave a bad taste in my mouth. Pun intended. I get the frenzied monster response to this. It's pure filth and the sleazy beats are great - I'd love to hear a dub - but it's nothing but distracting filler for me.

    Electric Chapel

Now I know bringing up plagiarism claims are a big no no when it comes to Gaga but damn this reminds me of The Cardigans' classic "Losing My Favourite Game". Those "do do dos" are so familiar and I think she's lifted the guitar riff too but whatever. This is a nice song and sometimes you don't have to break new ground to deliver a decent pop song. Ever since "Speechless" I've been wanting Lady Gaga to explore her inner rock chick and she almost does it here but her current obsession of mixing guitars with electronic elements takes over yet again. My problem here is the lyrics. What exactly is this song about? I just get visions of Elvis weddings in Las Vegas but knowing mother monster it's probably about resolving the Middle East conflict or famine in Africa.

    Yoü And I

This has been doing the rounds for a while now. Lady Gaga has performed it during her Monster's Ball tour for the best part of a year and the studio version isn't all that different. Produced by Mutt Lange, "Yoü And I" - what is with that fucking umlaut? - is this album's "Speechless" or "Brown Eyes". An overwrought piano rock ballad that is supposed to highlight the diva's versatility but just sounds like a Richard Marx B-side. I can't help but think Mutt would have been better off giving this to his ex-wife. Shania Twain would have nailed this. Gaga tries so hard to imbue it with pathos and meaning that it ends up being an empty exercise of vocal acrobatics. If nothing else it gives her something new to sing behind a flaming piano on the next tour. Distinctly average.

    The Edge Of Glory

First things first. This does sound very similar to Soraya's iconic 2008 smash "Sin Miedo" with a bit of Cher's "Song For The Lonely" thrown in for good measure. But they are two of my favourite songs of all time, so anything that borrows elements from them was always going to be a winner. I'm not convinced that this is the masterpiece that some have held it out to be (now that I've listened to them back to back a couple of times I think I prefer "Hair") but there's no denying it's a great song. There's a real sense of melancholy that permeates the verses, which only serves to make the explosive chorus all the more joyous. I love the now or never theme that runs through the lyrics and applaud Gaga from not making stupid noises or randomly singing in a different language. She has treated this song with the respect it deserves and Fernando Garibay moulds the craziest mix of Eurovision ready pop with "Born To Run" Bruce Springsteen. I even love the crazy sax solo. "The Edge Of Glory" is a worthy addition to Gaga's cannon of hits and deserves to sit proudly next to "Poker Face" and "Bad Romance". I just hate the fact that she will ruin the video with those stupid face implants but whatever. This is a reminder of what Lady Gaga is capable of when she just lets the music flow. It also underlines how sub par the vast majority of the rest of the album is.

I'm coming out... as an Avril stan!

I've always liked Avril. She might come across as a miserable bitch with a chip on her shoulder the size of Lady Gaga's penis but her music is hot. I never got around to reviewing "Goodbye Lullaby" on the blog but it would easily place in my top 10 albums of 2011. Thus far. Admittedly, it's not quite in the same league as her brilliant 2004 opus "Under My Skin" - which is one of my favourite albums of all time - but in comparison to the soulless shit being served up by Britney and Rihanna, it's a fucking masterpiece. At first I thought it was a little light on singles but with each new spin, I become more and more convinced that songs like "Push", "Wish You Were Here" and "I Love You" could be hits. A lot is riding on the second single. If "Smile" takes off, Avril has a (small) chance of snatching her pop/rock crown back from Pink. If not, it's only a matter of time before we see her co-anchoring The Voice next to Xtina. Actually that would be kind of amazing! But back to "Smile". The perky Max Martin/Shellback produced brat anthem is a total winner. Catchy, radio friendly and infused with enough attitude to keep the kids happy - this should do well with a decent video and a bit of promotion. Now Avril just needs to drag her bony arse back to Sydney for a tour. Nobody mopes around stage looking bored shitless better than her!

Third time lucky for Auburn?

Auburn is one of my favourite fledgling pop divas. Her debut "La La La" was a fun slice of JR Rotem produced urban dance - complete with a catchy ATC sample - but it was her second single that really won me over. "All About Him" showed the 22-year-old beauty in a completely different light. I loved the cute retro-pop sound and softer vocal but, unfortunately, it never quite caught on and failed to chart in the US. Fingers crossed she has more luck with single number three. "Perfect Two" is already something of a phenomenon on YouTube, clocking up over 30 million views, and is steadily climbing the iTunes top 200. So far, so good! And it's easy to see the appeal. Auburn's latest jam is so sweet it will rot your teeth. An acoustic love song bursting with quotable lyrics like "you can be the vodka and I can be the chaser", this will be the soundtrack to weddings and anniversaries for years to come. All it needs is a cute video, a bit of promotion and Auburn could have the commercial breakthrough she thoroughly deserves. Put your cynicism aside for four minutes and fall in love with "Perfect Two". Now when is this smash being released in Australia?

Aloe Blacc - Loving You Is Killing Me

Aloe Blacc might seem slightly out of place on Pop Trash Addicts but I'm obsessed with his new single "Loving You Is Killing Me". And thought what the fuck. The American rapper-turned-soul-singer scored a massive hit around Europe last year with "I Need A Dollar" and is currently sitting pretty in the UK top 20 with the track. It's a great song but I prefer the follow up. "Loving You Is Killing Me" picks up where Cee-Lo Green's "Fuck You" left off. It's a catchy, retro anthem about the dark underbelly of love. I love the 70s soul sound and Aloe delivers lyrics like "loving you should make me feel like I'm your king, you don't make me feel like anything" with heart and authenticity. My only problem with the whole project is the version of the song used in the film clip. The Numarek Mix on the physical single is completely different and vastly superior to this. The heavy funk that makes the original so distinctive has been replaced by an upbeat dance version with disco undertones. I don't approve. It's annoying because the video itself is fabulous. I had no idea he could dance like that! Anyway, this is the only version on YouTube - so check out "Loving You Is Killing Me" and jump on board the Aloe Blacc bandwagon before it gets too crowded.

Katy Perry - Live In Sydney (4 May 2011)

When did Katy Perry become so fucking amazing? I liked "One Of The Boys" but apart from the fabulous singles it wasn't particularly memorable. And then out of nowhere, she delivers one of the best pop albums in recent memory - complete with brilliant videos and an iconic image transformation. In the process she made chart history by scoring four consecutive #1 hits in America (with a possible fifth on the way) and lifted herself above Britney and Xtina on the pop hierarchy. I was interested to see how the new and improved Katy Perry would come off live and it was a very pleasant surprise. Gone is the faux angst that tinged her first Australian tour. The diva now only has one thing on her mind and that's FUN. Bright colours, cute gimmicks and upbeat pop anthems reigned supreme at last night's California Dreams show. It was a bit clumsy and often came off as a big budget Rock Eisteddfod entry but it ranks a close second behind Ke$ha as my favourite concert of 2011.

Pop's new princess began the show with a black and white video montage, which finds Katy cast as an unwilling and incompetent apprentice butcher who is bullied by her boss and dreams of working with baked goods. I'm not making this up! She then gets a magical cupcake from a super hot guy at her local bakery, goes to bed and falls into an Alice In Wonderland-esque alternate reality. She then sets out on a journey to find her missing cat. The storyline isn't that dissimilar to the narrative that ran through Gaga's Monster's Ball but the tone is completely different. While Mother Monster strives to be dark and different, Katy's world looks like Hello Kitty threw up all over it. The emphasis is on cute and kitsch but it works - largely due to the superstar's doll-like beauty and charm. She kicked off the show proper with "Teenage Dream" and the undeniable anthem sounded a lot better live than I expected. After seeing some of her recent TV performances, I was a bit worried about her voice but she was in fine form last night. Next was "Hummingbird Heartbeat" followed by one of my faves from her debut "Waking Up In Vegas".

The next segment was probably the controversial but arguably the most entertaining. Katy is duped into eating a "magical brownie" - ie. the bitch is stoned off her tits - and starts hallucinating. She then breaks into "Ur So Gay" before attaching some feathers to her butt to sing "Peacock". I still lapprove of that ridiculous trash and would love for it to be single 7 or 8 from "Teenage Dream". I'm not being facetious. She could easily release that many tracks from the album. And I'm sure they would all be hits. The 26-year-old moved on to "I Kissed A Girl" after that and channelled her inner 1950s bombshell in a gorgeous gown. She is so pretty up close. It's breathtaking. I'm not really sure about the jazz-tastic performance of her breakthrough hit though but I loved hearing "Circle The Drain" live. That is probably my least favourite song from "Teenage Dream" but it's a link to the old Katy and she rocked it. Next was "ET" - complete with a straight jacket dance routine she stole from Kylie circa 1997 - but I am obsessed with the song and loved every second of it.

It was finally time to move away from the hits and sing a couple of "Teenage Dream" album tracks. I always considered "Who Am I Living For?" a bit of a stinker but I have a whole new appreciation for it now. The same goes for "Pearl" - which was partly-performed sitting on two acrobats, hovering over the stage. It was exquisite. Just as pretty was "Not Like The Movies". This needs to be a future single if they are too stupid to go with the hit-in-waiting "The One That Got Away". The depth of good material on "Teenage Dream" is unbelievable but a ballad would be a nice change of pace. Speaking of change-ups, Katy's already famous karaoke segment was a blast. She pretended to take requests (but sang the same old songs as every other stop on the tour) and then promised to kiss an audience member if they knew all four. For the record Ms Perry belted out Rihanna's "Only Girl In The World", Jay Z's "Big Pimpin'", Rebecca Black's "Friday" - AMAZING! - and Willow Smith's "Whip My Hair". After that she was carried into the audience to pash a crying and shaking teenage girl. Katy is so down with the gays!

The adorable diva then dedicated "Thinking Of You" to Australia and said she didn't think she would be playing a venue like the Entertainment Centre so soon. I'm not surprised. I remember seeing her at the Enmore theatre in 2009 and all she had on stage with her was a band and microphone. How times have changed! "Hot N Cold" was another flashback to the old Katy and it brought everyone to their feet. I think I saw her magical dress changing routine on Australia's Got Talent years ago but it was still a lot of fun. Next up was single number five "Last Friday Night (TGIF)", which has been on high rotation on my iPod since the album was released in 2010. With a decent video and I remix, I can see this becoming another chart topper.

The night's most unexpected moment was a cover of Whitney Houston's "I Wanna Dance With Somebody". It was so much fun. I loved her take on Nippy's classic and she earned extra points for dragging a bunch of hyperventilating teenagers on stage to dance with her. Katy closed the show with an impeccable performance of "Firework", a song that will go down as one of the greatest of the early 21st century. She's had trouble hitting the high notes in several TV performances but this was brilliant. As was the conclusion to the story, which finds Katy falling in love with the baker boy and returning to stage in a cupcake dress to sing "California Gurls" as an encore. Sloppy? A little. Cheesy? Very. Contrived? Somewhat. Enjoyable? Always.

Miranda Cosgrove & the best EP of 2011

Miranda Cosgrove first appeared on my pop radar last year when I stumbled across "Kissin U" in a German record store. The hot pink cover looked completely ridiculous, which was reason enough for me to buy it. I finally got around to playing the single about three months later and was surprised by how much I loved it. By then I knew she was a squeaky clean Nickelodeon child star (think Miley pre-Salvia) but her Taylor Swift-lite sound was a breath of fresh air. The rest of her debut album was disappointing but I was still interested enough to import her latest EP. And it was worth every cent. "High Maintenance" is a pop triumph. I'm shocked by the lack of attention it's received from radio and the blogosphere. There isn't a bad song on this. Sure, it's a rather blatant attempt to give Miranda an edgier sound but I don't give a fuck about her complete absence of credibility. Particularly when the tunes are this hot!

"High Maintenance" kicks off with "Dancing Crazy", which was penned by Max Martin, Shellback and Avril Lavigne. It was originally intended for the Canadian diva's "Goodbye Lullaby" album but it was given the flick - probably because it sounds like a carbon copy of "What The Hell". Happily, Avril's trash is Miranda's treasure. I adore this hot mess. The chorus is amazing if you overlook the 17-year-old's pronunciation of "dancing" (gurl, you're not Madonna - drop the fake English accent!) and her attempt to channel Avril gives me the giggles. The real EP's real highlight comes next.

"High Maintenance" is the handiwork of Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo and Billy Steinberg (who is currently experiencing a career revival thanks to Nicole Scherzinger's "Don't Hold Your Breath"). They have crafted an "Opposites Attract" for 2011 - only without MC Skat Kat's killer rhymes and Paula Abdul's helium vocals. I love everything about this. The lyrics are completely ridiculous ("I crashed your new Ferrari, baby fix that dent! Does that make me high maintenance?") and I don't exactly buy Miranda as a crazy party girl but this is achingly cute and undeniably catchy. Pop trash fans will cream their jeans over this one.

Some amazing names worked on this gem. Lucas Secon (Kylie's "Get Outta My Way") contributes "Face Of Love", the EP's mid-tempo moment. It's probably my least favourite of the five songs but it suits Miranda's voice perfectly and makes a nice change of pace. I'm way more excited about track four. "Kiss You Up" was one of my favourite songs from Shontelle's flop album and I'm so happy someone has decided to cover it. The production is pretty much the same and while Miranda's voice isn't as powerful as the rich man's Rihanna, she makes the song her own.

The EP closes with another up-tempo dance anthem - this time courtesy of Greg Kurstin and hit songwriter Bonnie McKee, who contributed the amazing "TGIF" to Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream" album. "Sayonara" is a "Circus" era Britney knock off but like Emily Osment before her, Miranda easily outdoes the original. This has a hot beat and a cute chorus. "High Maintenance" is so good, I kind of wish Miranda had tacked on another 5 songs and released an album. It would have been an absolute killer sophomore set. As it is, I have a new favourite teen Queen and a handful of stunning trash anthems to blast until album two is ready. Highly recommended!

Justin Bieber - Live in Sydney (April 29)

Justin Bieber live in is an utterly surreal experience. I was expecting to see hysterical tweens (and there were thousands of them at Friday night's concert) but their equally frenzied mothers and gay brothers were a bit of a surprise. Even more disturbing was the singer's highly inappropriate DJ, who warmed up the crowd - median age 12 - with Wynter Gordon's "Dirty Talk" and kept asking all the single ladies if they wanted to get with Justin. In his defence, he did play Ke$ha's "Blow" - so props for that. Then there was the slightly redundant video montage of Biebus as a child (ie. from about 2 years ago) and the King of Pop's random plea for audience members not to text and drive. I hope his fans remember that when they hit puberty and get a licence. Strangely, all these factors just made the concert more enjoyable. It was occasionally bizarre and often a little demented but never boring or predictable. Justin delivers an unforgettable hour and a half of hits and I feel lucky to have seen pop's first real phenomenon since the Spice Girls at the peak of his game.

Biebus launched his holy gospel with a couple of older songs ("Love Me" and "Bigger") from the original 2009 "My World" EP. None of the girls around me knew either song but that didn't stop them crying and screaming for Australia. The thing that really surprised me was how simple the stage was. There is no set to speak of. Just one screen, the band and a couple of dancers. At first it was a bit disconcerting but with all eyes on Justin, I guess props are kind of redundant. He eventually moved onto some newer material from "My World 2.0", including the awesome "Never Let You Go". That was followed by a stripped back segment where JB pulled a Madonna and pretended to play the guitar. "Favourite Girl" and "One Less Lonely Girl" had his disciples swooning and they even dragged an embarrassed looking tween out of the audience to be serenaded by his holiness. I was pressed - it shoulda been me!

Things started to heat up after the ballad section when Justin broke into his Usher assisted smash "Somebody To Love". He had a costume change and his new black outfit was rather stylish. There was something distinctly Michael Jackson about the costumes (down to the sequined hanky that dangled from the teen idol's back pocket) and the choreography that Justin performed with relative ease. Next up was my favourite JB track "Never Say Never", which, as hard as this may be to believe, is even more spectacular live! I loved the dance routine and was highly amused by his random thug poses. During this section Justin also performed his break-through hit "One Time" and played the drums. He's so talented! The video montages were a bit vomit inducing but the crowd loved them and the clips gave Biebus time to change into a fetching black and red hoodie. Why wasn't that available at the merchandise stand?

The last quarter of the concert was probably the most enjoyable. There were some classy pyrotechnics and a couple of fun covers. Justin paid tribute to Michael Jackson with a cute rendition of "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" and belted out a bubblegum version of Aerosmith's classic "Walk This Way". He then slowed things right down by sitting down at the paino to sing the incredibly lovely "Down To Earth" from "My World". I don't think Biebus gets enough credit for his music. He's only really released one album and an EP but he already has a bunch of fantastic songs up his sleeve. Another example is "Eenie Meenie", which is impossible to resist whether you're 8 or 28. JB then left the stage but hurried back to ask what the audience wanted to hear as an encore. I thought the screams of "Baby" would permanently damage my ears and I had to elbow my friend to stop loudly prefacing each request with "a dingo's got my" but it was worth the hearing loss and death stares from parents. "Baby" is an undeniable modern pop classic. I can't think of a better way to end one of the most exuberant, unashamedly fun concerts I've seen in a very long time. Bring on the live CD and DVD!

You will o-Bey her!

To be honest I'm completely mystified by Beyoncé's "Run The World (Girls)" campaign. I love it but any song without a chorus was always going to be a strange choice of lead single and her promotional schedule has thus far consisted of strolling around Paris looking fabulous. Even the person pretending to be Britney on Twitter occasionally tweets her fans! Meanwhile, Bey's account is as virginal as Michelle Williams' vagina. What is going on? Putting the finishing touches to her Obama sponsored crusade against childhood obesity it seems.

I should be annoyed but B's "Move Your Body" video, which dropped today, is easily the best thing I've seen all year. Just when I was beginning to question the Queen's mojo, she comes out of nowhere and snatches every wig in sight with her beauty, charisma and killer dance moves. In case you missed my previous "Move Your Body" post, the song is a kid friendly re-work of "Get Me Bodied" with new choreography intended to burn calories! Beyoncé rocks a killer pair of denim shorts and knee high socks in the ridiculously cute video but it's her sweetness and flawless dancing that gets me.

She really is in a league of her own when she cuts loose and has fun. Bey has the music in her. You can see the joy on her face as she gets her Dougie on and does the running man. "Move Your Body" was obviously shot in a couple of takes for next to nothing but it has more charm and personality that Riri's entire filmography. Watch in awe as a legend does her thang.

Jenefer Siân will Call You Out

There's nothing I love more than an underground pop diva and Welsh born, American raised Jenefer Siân definitely fits the bill. She has been releasing singles independently for the last year or so - "Take A Number" is my jam - and she's gearing up to unveil her latest smash "Call You Out". The song is a bit of a change from the upbeat dance-pop of her previous offerings but if you like your music with a bit of attitude then this ode to two-faced bitches could be just what you're looking for! Jenefer sounds great as usual and the lyrics are pretty universal. I'm not really feeling the rock-infused electro production but points for trying something different. In the lead up to her first round of showcases, the sultry stunner will be releasing a new single every three weeks. "Call You Out" is coming to iTunes very soon but for a limited time you can actually download it for free from Jenefer's website. Make sure you check out the video, which finds the singer confronting her duplicitous best friend. I would have done more than throw her in the pool!

My thoughts on Gaga's Judas

The second single from Mother Monster's highly anticipated new album leaked yesterday and it's already sitting at number one on US iTunes with predicted sales of upwards of 400,000 copies. That should be enough to snag the world's most ragged looking 25 year old another chart-topper and elevate her a further rung above Katy Perry and Rihanna on the pop ladder but is it any good? Here are some random thoughts:

    1. It's better than "Born This Way", which isn't really that much of an achievement.

    2. "Judas" has been widely likened to "Bad Romance" but I don't agree. That song has an underbelly of hate, hurt and love that is completely missing from Gaga's latest single. There is nothing raw or personal about this. "Bad Romance" will be remembered as one of the best pop songs of the noughties because it rings true. Behind the slick production and catchy vocal hooks is a very simple break-up anthem that will stand the test of time. "Judas", on the other hand, is emptier than Toni Braxton's bank account.

    3. I like that it sounds like Bananarama in the chorus.

    4. Lady Gaga needs to stop working with RedOne. Sure, he knows how to keep things fresh for musical geniuses like Kat DeLuna but his relationship with Stefania is getting boring. I hate "Born This Way" but it represents - for better or worse - some kind of development, while "Judas" could have been a "Fame Monster" B-side.

    5. Time to leave the religious imagery alone. It's so incredibly dull. She's done it before - as has every diva with a rebellious streak since 1980. Just move on, ho.

    6. Despite all my bitching, I don't mind it and am able to listen the whole way through without cringing or wanting to call Madonna's lawyers. It's just that, as a former Monster, I expect so much more. Lady Gaga is too talented to be writing throwaway pop songs that Aubrey O'Day would reject.

    7. I don't know how I feel about Gaga's third album now. The first two were so brilliant, part of me thinks she can't get it so drastically wrong this time around. But why release these stinkers as singles if there is better material in the can? At least
    the cover is BRILLIANT.

How do you feel about "Judas"?

Bruno Mars - Live In Sydney - April 14

Bruno Mars is a weapon. He is arguably the most successful songwriter on the planet and well on his way to becoming the world's biggest male pop star. Which is surprising because there's something quite old fashioned about him. He's not setting the clubs on fire like Taio Cruz or hiding behind a sheen of urban credibility like Chris Brown. Instead he's churning out pared back songs that capture simple feelings and emotions. "Just The Way You Are" is cornier than a Dorito chip but it will be played at weddings and funerals for the next 50 years because the sentiment is genuine. The same goes for "Grenade". Anyone who has ever been fucked over can identify with that bitter anthem. Scarily, that's just the tip of the dick. "Doo-Wops & Hooligans" is bursting with hit singles and future standards. A lot of it isn't really my thing - or, at least, I didn't think so until Thursday night - but I was excited to see him live. Particularly at Luna Park's inappropriately titled Big Top, an intimate venue that recently housed flops like Goldfrapp and Scissor Sisters.

Seeing Bruno up close and personal was amazing. I knew he could hold a tune but he is the complete package, playing a variety of instruments (guitar, drum and ukulele) and dancing like a young Michael Jackson. In fact, by the end of the show, I had the feeling that Hawaii's best export since Lost could be the heir to La Toya's brother's empty throne if he keeps his shit together - such is his raw talent. He sounded incredible and won over the audience with his easy charm and cheeky humour. There's not much point going through the setlist because Bruno basically played the entire album along with his smash hit features "Billionaire" and "Nothin' On You". Highlights were "Count On Me" (my favourite from "Doo-Wops"), current single "The Lazy Song" (see the cute video below) and a smokin' hot rendition of "Our First Time" that left me pitching a tent. He also delivered awesome covers of "Billie Jean" and "Seven Nation Army" before closing with "Grenade" and "Just The Way You Are". The man with the Midas touch then came back to sing "Runaway Baby" - complete with James Brown inspired choreography. It was a brilliant way to close one of the most impressive displays I've seen in a very long time.

A Week Until Death

Apologies for recent the lack of updates. I got my gangsta lean on over the weekend - hitting up a Snoop Dogg & Nelly showcase on Friday, before rocking Supafest on Saturday. It was all very messy and I just couldn't face the computer. Which is annoying because I've been wanting to post Wynter Gordon's new gem since Thursday. You might remember that I wrote about "Til Death" a couple of weeks ago. Some bitches questioned the veracity of my claim that Denzal Park gave the track a makeover, well check out the clip below and take a seat! The Aussie duo have given the track a polish and it's already apparent that Wynter has another smash on her hands given the song's non-stop radio coverage. It's a killer jam and, dare I say it, an improvement on the amazing "Dirty Talk". However, I have two minor problems with it:

    1. It is quite similar to Britney's "Til The World Ends" - both lyrically and thematically - albeit it with a gifted vocalist and fresher production. Wynter's track has been doing the rounds for months, so I think Ke$ha might have been surfing YouTube stoned one day and forgot she heard it before penning Brit's flop.

    2. The WAWA radio edit is vastly better than the version being pimped out below. I love Denzal Park - a lot - but their version sounds like an edited club mix, while the Polish producers have turned the song into an irresistibly upbeat pure pop explosion. But until that leaks, I guess you don't know what you're missing.

Whatever. The song is defining and it wouldn't surprise me if it follows Wynter's triple platinum Australian debut all the way to the top of the charts. Enjoy and download (legally) when the song is released on Friday. Expect a remix package featuring the aforementioned WAWA, Dan Castro, Oxford Hustlers, Andy Murphy and Polen to follow shortly.

Katy Perry - E.T. Video Review

It's been a week since the premiere of "E.T." and I'm still finding new things to love about Katy Perry's latest video. In fact, there's only one thing I'd change about it and that's the completely redundant Kanye West cameo. I haven't been this annoyed by a tacked on rap since Mims ruined "All I See"! Apart from that, "E.T." is pretty flawless. The clip suits the song perfectly and has made people excited about music videos again. Which makes the criticism directed at it all the more confounding. Seeing as Katy is too busy celebrating her 5th US number one hit to give a shit - she now has more than Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera - I thought I'd respond for her.

    1. It rips off Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" video
Are you derelict homosexuals for real? Sure, they are both set in space but that's where the similarities end. Gaga's grim manifesto is a pretentious exercise in shock value, while Katy's clip plays like "WALL•E - The Musical". The storylines, costumes and art direction could not be more different. Mother monster's desperate need to be edgy is palpable. Pop's favourite one time faux lesbian, on the other hand, is just happy to look pretty floating around in her alien make-up. That might sound like a dis but Katy's entire "American Dream" marketing campaign has been built on kitsch and the diva somehow manages to bring that innate cuteness to the album's darkest song. For the record, I'm choosing to forget that "Circle The Drain" exists.

    2. It has no plot
Excuse me but this shit is the intergalactic Dr Zhivago! Here's my interpretation of the plot. Alien Katy is being used as a sex slave by Cuntye in that sick pod. Because that's the kind of slimy shit he'd pull in space. One day she has some kind of psychic connection with a broke down robot on a deserted planet, who is rotting away on the scrapheap - much like Ashanti. So Katy jumps ship, transforms into a sexy humanoid and learns all about his shithole planet as she plummets through space towards her soulmate. It's a long journey so she has plenty of time to experiment with her hair and try on a few different outfits. By the end of the song, the persistent bitch lands and brings that fucker to life. Probably by humming "Ur So Gay" into his robot ear. They both change into their true selves and life happily ever after. You mad?

    3. This blockbuster is a publicity stunt to nab her 4 consecutive US number ones hits
No shit. What did you expect - a $200 fiasco like "Better Than Today"? Katy's record label actually has some idea what they're doing.

Kristine Elezaj... Still On The Warpath!

In what has to be a record for the longest gap between the release of a single and the debut of a video clip, Kristine Elezaj's "Warpath" finally hits YouTube 7 months after the song first appeared on iTunes. I guess that means there's still hope for Adele to whip something up for "Someone Like You"! Speaking of classy, soulful vocalists - Krissy has been an obsession of mine for months. She first appeared on the blog in December and it was love at first listen. If you haven't heard "Warpath" yet, drop everything and click play. You really don't know what you've been missing.

Kristine's jam is pop trash at its finest. I love the catchy chorus, constantly quote the fabulous lyrics ("I saw that trick that you was with last night, she was Justin Bieber's look-a-like!") and ache for the faux Britney production. Emily Osment and her crack team of Brit Brit copyright infringers could never! So, that leaves one question. Was the clip worth the wait? The answer is a resounding yes. Sure, Krissy just stands around looking hot with a bit of choreography and an owl thrown in for good measure but it's adorable and will look amazing on the video jukebox in your local gay bar. All hail Queen Kristine!

Kat DeLuna's Latest Smash

I'm seriously obsessed with Kat DeLuna at the moment. As far as I'm concerned, the Dominican diva can do no wrong. I still listen to "Push Push" daily and I'm finally on board with "Party O'Clock" after Jenny's ruthless thievery highlighted what an awesome song it is. Despite that nasty affair, Kat's innovative campaign to become the Belgian Madonna marches bravely on with the third single from "Inside Out". And she has really outdone herself this time. "Dancing Tonight" is the kind of pure pop explosion that grabs you by the balls from the first listen and just squeezes tighter and tighter with each play.

I love everything about this jam from the demented production (which fuses trance elements with Latin rhythms and RedOne-esque urban dance beats) to the hands-in-the-air chorus and cute lyrics. It's utterly joyous and Kat even channels Beyoncé in the video. Seriously, what does this bitch have to do to catch a break? "Dancing Tonight" might be a bit too... gay for the US market but it's custom designed for UK and Australian chart success. Particularly if she releases the rap free version on the promo single. Make sure you check out the pop pioneer's hot video. If "Spinning Around" fucked "Single Ladies", this is how I imagine their love child would look.

DeLuna Gate - J Lo Vs Kat

Last week I wrote a post about the Australian success of "On The Floor" and briefly mentioned the similarities between J Lo's worldwide chart topper and Kat DeLuna's... top 20 Belgian smash "Party O'Clock". Well, time has come to weigh in on the biggest scandal to rock popular music since Janet edited Khia out of her "So Excited" video for being too beautiful. This is tough because I love them. On one hand, seeing Jenny back at number one after half a decade of flopdom makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. On the other, Kat's entire career has been a flop. Seriously, when is this poor bitch gonna get a break? My sympathies are split, so let's look at the facts:

    1. Ms DeLuna did it first. "Party O'Clock" was released in Belgium last October, while "On The Floor" leaked in early January.

    2. RedOne produced both tracks and is known for re-using hot beats the way most of us recycle paper.

    3. The Dominican diva is an international superstar, so it's thoroughly plausible that J Lo heard the track and shot RedOne a text saying "omg party oclock iz so dope kat deluna 4eva!" and he misinterpreted her honest intentions.

You don't have to be Detective La Toya to see that this is all RedOne's fault. It's not cool to recycle a song and give it to someone else - even if it is a really hot track that deserves a bigger audience. And "On The Floor" is a pretty blatant copy. Both songs have identical themes, similar beats and even some of the same lyrics (both mention partying in Ibiza and Africa). Kat, however, sees it differently and put Jenny on blast, telling the New York Daily News "I've seen this before, where the more established artist tries to take the vision and artistic ideas away from an emerging artist, and assumes no one will notice because of their bigger shadow... luckily, my loyal fans and the power of the Internet have let the 'Kat' out of the bag". For that last pun alone, she has my love and admiration for life!

Personally, I think Kat should take it as a compliment. She can't give her shit away outside Belgium and superstars are still jacking her swagger. The Dominican diva's time will come. Her album is amazing and I'm sure her pioneering ways will eventually pay off. In the meantime, enjoy "On The Floor" for what it is - an incredibly catchy tribute to the talent of Kat DeLuna. Compare both masterpieces below.
