An Australian Flop Vs Soraya

I am so disgusted I can hardly type. Natalie Gauci - better known as the least successful Australian Idol winner in history - has dared to fuck with the reigning Queen of Spanish pop by covering the title track of her new album. Sure, Natalie co-wrote "Dreamer" and probably recorded it first but that's no excuse for stealing Soraya's thunder. The sad flop should be grateful that an international megastar would deign to sing her song instead of using it for herself. It's like Malena Gracia covering Maria Callas - not right! I just don't see the point of Natalie's version. Her voice was never going to match Soraya's glorious pipes and the production is cheaper than her wig in the tacky video (below). Admittedly, the remixes are good - which explains its current top 5 placing on the ARIA club chart - but why not mix the original? It's about time Australia was blessed by the Spanish angel's legendary beauty and breathtaking talent! Now instead of hearing Soraya in the club, I'll be tortured with this shit. Thanks a lot. And to think I spent $5.99 on Natalie's flop album when it made its way to the bargain bin at JB Hi-Fi! If you want a good laugh, check out the video clip that accompanies this abomination. Soraya would never approve...

Shayne Ward's Dubious Comeback

This blog is a raised middle finger to musical snobbery. I couldn't give a fuck about credibility and wasn't particularly fussed when I heard Shayne Ward's new single was a cover of Nickelback's "Gotta Be Somebody". As far as I'm concerned, it's better to butcher a piece of shit than fuck up something truly magnificent. I'm looking at you, Joe McElderry. My only problem with Shayne's comeback is the fact he's wearing clothing. That and the blatant laziness. Unlike most of his contemporaries, 2005's X Factor winner has the money behind him to come up with something fresh and original. Instead he takes three years to cover a generic rock song from 2008 that nobody liked in the first place. Good job! For his sake, I hope the vomit inducing lyrics about being sad and lonely get middle aged housewives into a CD buying frenzy but I'm moving on. His previous two albums didn't really do it for me and this insipid effort is the final straw. I don't even like the cover. Shayne looks gaunt. Lay off the exercise and eat some Tim Tams before you end up resembling Aaron Carter! The only saving grace is the trashtastic remix package. I can't believe they roped in Almighty. I guess Bimbo Jones drew the line at this shit! In all fairness, Andy does a good job. It's not quite as fabulous as his take on Usher's "OMG" but you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. The always reliable Moto Blanco also deliver a fun interpretation but for pure low brow trash value you can't really beat an Almighty mix of a Nickelback cover. Brace yourself and give it a listen (below).

Worst Duet Of All Time?

Someone recently asked me what I'd nominate as the worst duet of all time. It took a while for my brain to compute the long list of possibilities but I eventually settled on this jaw dropping disasterpiece. For those of you too young or too stoned to remember the mid-90s, Merril Bainbridge was briefly the golden girl of Australian pop. Her double platinum debut album spawned a couple of massive hits and she surprised just about everyone by repeating her success in America, where "Mouth" went on to become an unlikely top 5 hit. Merril looked set for big things but sadly it wasn't to be. Her second album peaked outside the top 50 and she never bothered the upper reaches of the charts ever again. You can blame changing tastes and the patchy nature of "Between The Days" (an album that I still love, by the way) but I think the real culprit is the unlucky diva's abysmal duet with Shaggy.

A rancid cover of Sonny & Cher's seminal classic, "I Got U Babe" is the musical equivalent of being raped with a chainsaw. It's inhumane and unbearably painful. There's nothing wrong with an odd couple but unlike Seiko and Donnie Wahlberg - this is NOT the right combination. These two have no chemistry whatsoever and their voices are a match made in Cheryl Cole's recording studio (ie. hell). Merril's soft, little girl voice is all but trampled by Shaggy's Jamaican twang - rendering the song utterly ridiculous. And yet, as bad as it is, I'm still glad to have this stunning #62 smash in my collection (above). I love car crash pop and I wish Merril would come out of hiding. She's a great songwriter and the world is ready for "The Garden Part 2"!

So tell me, what duet makes you want to pierce your eardrums with a rusty knitting needle? I can think of a few other contenders....

(How Does It Feel) In My Arse?

Well, I haven't had too many complaints but enough about my miserable sex life. The title of this post actually refers to Deirdre Halliwell's brilliant new anthem, which is dedicated to yours truly! This is one of the proudest moments of my life. I still can't believe an internationally renowned megastar like Deirdre wrote a song in my honour - and what an amazing song it is! I've been harassing the stunning Ms Halliwell to cover a Kylie track for her next smash hit EP (her last offering was certified plastic in at least 3 former Soviet states) for ages but I wasn't expecting anything as fabulous as this. "In My Arms" has been transformed into the ultimate gay sex anthem with classy lyrics like "the KY's open and it's up my bum, hurry up and get a condom"! The whole thing is sublime, from Deirdre's angelic but completely out of tune vocals right through to the hilarious clip. It's only a matter of time before Sony BMG comes knocking on this woman's door, mark my words! In the meantime, Deirdre is flogging her latest album on Ebay for the bargain price of 1 pound and has started an amazing new blog. A huge thanks to Deirdre for this amazing honour!Source URL: https://popmusicrecords.blogspot.com/search/label/Crap%20Covers

Hazell Dean Sings ABBA

Rug munching dance diva Hazell Dean has been a favourite of mine since her glory days as the pre-Kylie queen of Stock Aitken Waterman. Songs like "Searchin'", "Whatever I Do (Wherever I Go)" and "Who's Leaving Who" are pop classics and rank as some of the finest material to ever be churned out by the hit factory. Unfortunately, the hits began to run dry in the late 80s and like any sensible down on her luck diva, Hazell turned her focus to the club scene and frequently collaborated with Hi-NRG guru Ian Levine (with varying degrees of success). At her lowest point in the mid-90s, the leading lesbian of dance recorded an album of Hi-NRG ABBA covers.

Words can not adequately describe the agony and the ecstasy that is "Hazell Dean Sings ABBA". The musical equivalent of a car crash, reason dictates that the album should be set on fire or thrown in the nearest garbage bin but I can't get enough of Hazell's Hi-NRG ABBA covers. Apart from its obvious camp appeal, the joy of Hazell's ABBA tribute album lies in the unusual song selection. Hazell gives a batch of lesser known ABBA gems a makeover. "If It Wasn't For The Nights" and "Andante, Andante" are two obvious standouts. Several ABBA classics are still represented. You haven't lived until you hear the tacky keyboards on "S.O.S." or Hazell's hilariously upbeat interpretation of "The Winner Takes It All" (a lofty #89 "hit"). Not surprisingly the album flopped to an extent that would shame La Toya Jackson but Hazell's misunderstood masterpiece has found a loyal cult following and has been re-issued at least 5 times. Fuck "ABBA Gold"! Who needs the real thing when you could be listening to Hazell's trashtastic covers? "Hazell Dean Sings ABBA" is a pop trash classic.

My 1st Birthday & Kylie Covers Galore!

It's hard to believe that Pop Trash Addicts has been polluting the web with the best that low brow music has to offer for a whole year! I started the blog as a bit of joke and never expected to still be doing it twelve months later. I've spent the past few days reflecting on my first 250 posts and if I'm entirely honest, there has been more filler than killer. On the whole, however, I'm quite proud of this place. There have been several good posts and a handful that I'm still really proud of, which is more than I could have expected a year ago. If I had to choose a favourite it would be my exploration of Dannii's gay icon status, while the worst post sticks out like a sore thumb. I must have been high! To celebrate both my blog's birthday and Kylie's 10th #1 hit in Australia with "2 Hearts", I thought I would return to my favourite Kylie post. In addition to re-posting those 10 craptastic Kylie covers, I've also thrown in several new favourites. By the way, this isn't meant to be an exhaustive list. Enjoy!

Soraya Arnelas - I Should Be So Lucky

Soraya swept to fame in Spain after finishing second on the talent show, "Operacion Triunfo". However, if she appeared on "X Factor" singing this cover of "I Should Be So Lucky", Dannii would have sent the silly bitch packing! Soraya's version is a poorly performed mess but it's still seriously fabulous. The song appears on Soraya's third album, "Dolce Vita", which comes highly recommended.

Daryl Somers - On A Night Like This

Yes, I know that Pandora and Anna Vissi did it first but I find it highly unlikely that Daryl was familiar with either of those Eurotrash divas. Australia's much maligned host of "Dancing With The Stars" was no doubt inspired by Kylie's #1 hit and against all odds, turns in a truly remarkable cover version. I think the big band sound and jazzy approach works an absolute treat.

Nerina Pallot - Confide In Me

Nerina is one of those annoyingly over-hyped English singer/songwriters. That said, I found her anti-war anthem strangely catchy and I like the fact that she was dropped by her previous record label after rubbishing them on the internet. Classy! Nerina's cover of "Confide In Me" is pretty faithful to the original. It's pleasant but not in the same league as Kylie's spine-tingling classic.

Hazell Dean - Turn It Into Love

There's nothing quite like a butch lesbian singing a Hi-NRG pop classic. Hazell's version of "Turn It Into Love" stays close to the original but falls short of matching Kylie's version. I love this tacky 12" mix!

Jose Gonzalez - Hand On Your Heart

A pretentious cover by the Swedish James Blunt. Yes, Jose really is that bad! The less said, the better.

    Erdmoebel - Aus Meinem Kopf

It speaks volumes for the quality of song that it still sounds amazing in a different language, pared right back, without any of the studio wizardry that made it so spectacular in the first place. Erdmoebel achieve just that by turning "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" into a dark and moody, atmospheric groove. The concept sounds awful but it works spectacularly well. "Aus Meinem Kopf" wont drag you to the dance floor but it makes for perfect late night listening.

Steps - Better The Devil You Know

Steps were shit in general but this cover really is cheap and nasty. Usually I would find that combination irresistible but this majestic track deserved so much better.

Kelly Marie & Tina Charles - Your Disco Needs You

Kelly Marie and Tina Charles were two of the leading ladies of English disco. I love them both dearly and intend to devote entire posts to both of them. However, there really is no excusing the musical abomination that is their duet re-make of "Your Disco Needs You". How did it come to this, ladies? I'm not sure whether to laugh or cry! This is so tragic, yet I would be a complete liar if I said I didn't like it. So fabulously awful, it has to be heard to be believed!

    Leah Dizon - Fever

Apparently Leah is Japanese TV personality, who occasionally dabbles in pop. I think her version of "Fever" is rather lovely and I'd love to hear more of Leah's music. By the way, the clip needs age activation because Leah is a bit of a ho.

Kia - Better The Devil You Know

Kia is one of the cheap tarts on the Almighty roster. You know what to expect from an Almighty mix and this doesn't disappoint. Yes, it's craptastic and nasty but I like it. Kia has also covered "What Do I Have To Do?". Grab your disco whistle and get dancing!

Debra Stephenson - I Believe In You

Fans of "Bad Girls" will know Deb as the seriously fucked up inmate Shell Dockley. Deb got her big break in music after appearing on "Stars In Their Eyes" on which she covered "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" (pic below). Deb's Kylie cover received such a rousing response that she decided to take on "I Believe In You" for her debut album. The result is so bad it's fucking amazing pop at its finest!

    Zeigeist - Giving You Up

This cover version was posted on the sadly missed Catchy Tunes Of Sweden Blog. I loved it from the first listen and this is probably the only cover that improves on the original. That might sound like sacrilege but I think "Giving You Up" is one of the worst singles Kylie has ever released. It sounds too similar to the rubbish being churned out by Girls Aloud. Zeigeist, on the other hand, have made it their own with their avant-garde approach. Great stuff!

The Jacob Sisters - Your Disco Needs You

This recording is surely the holy grail of pop trash. How will I ever top a group of poodle carrying, 70 year old German grannies covering Kylie's legendary gay anthem in heavily accented English? It's disconcerting and yet strangely satisfying to know that I have officially scraped the bottom of the musical barrel and still managed to wholeheartedly enjoy the experience! The Jacob Sisters' interpretation of "Your Disco Needs You" defies description. I'm convinced the ladies have no idea what the hell they are singing and the poor pronunciation only makes the song more bewildering. Kylie must be so proud!

Vina Uyen My - Come Into My World

Vina is a saucy Vietnamese diva, who apparently released a cover of "Come Into My World" at almost the same time as Kylie. Vina's version is actually rather lovely. Most excitingly, Vina has released a breathtaking video clip - which basically involves Vina putting on litres of make-up and trying on jewels! I love the camp dance routine! Watch it here.

    Darren Hayes - 2 Hearts

Another desperate attempt from Darren to ingratiate himself with the gay community. Yawn!

    The Smurfs - The Locomotion

No, I haven't forgotten about Little Eva. However, this is most definitely a cover of Kylie's version. I love the Smurfs (yes, I am a nerd at heart) and one of my favourite trashy records is their album of 80s covers! I actually think this is rather excellent. Leave me alone, I never pretended to have any taste!

La Toya Jackson - The Locomotion

The Smurfs version of "The Locomotion" left you cold? Surely goddess Toy's stunning interpretation will get your blood pumping. La Toya's talent truly has no limit. Watch this AMAZING live performance. You may need a tissue!

Deirdre Halliwell - Who Do I Have To Screw? & Out Of My Head

Nobody reinterprets pop classics quite like Scotland's filthiest bitch! "Who Do I Have To Screw?" and "Out Of My Head" aptly display Deirdre's stunning vocal range and lyrical genius. I'm very proud to count Deirdre as a friend - you don't meet this kind of talent every day!

Wink - Turn It Into Love

I adore this popular Japanese cover of "Turn It Into Love". It's so sweet and effortlessly upbeat - just like the original.

Jacquii Cann - I Believe In You

Jacquii Cann's so-unbelievably-bad-it's-brilliant cover of "I Believe In You" is a modern classic. This song is an instant cure for depression, if Jacquii can land a recording contract with those croaky pipes, there's still hope for us all. A work of trashtastic genius that belongs in every Kylie fan's collection. Bless you, Jacquii. I'm gagging for your next "hit"!

    Sophie Lawrence - Secrets

Kylie's "Rhythm Of Love" album was such a perfect slice of pop that it was easy for several gems to get lost in the mix. One of those lost classics was "Secrets", an album track that Sophie Lawrence later tried to release as a single. Mobius recently wrote an outstanding post on Sophie's misfortune.

Before I finish, I'd like to thank everyone who has contributed to Pop Trash Addicts over the past year: Robpop (for being my MSN slut sister), Magical Froggy (for his graphic design genius and brilliant Caprice article), Jamie (for his amazing freestyle post and generosity), Jay (for his wonderful expose on Goose and ongoing support) and Tommie (for replying to my drunken text messages and sharing his music collection). Copacabana - Amanda Lear Style!

Sorry for the recent lack of updates but I've spent the week doped up at home after having an operation on Tuesday. I'm having internet withdrawals, so I thought I'd use the fifteen minutes before Bold & The Beautiful to write a quick post. Expect this to be a high quality read! I've been meaning to review a couple of albums but I think I'll leave that for a time when I've swallowed less pills than Liza Minnelli. Instead, I've drawn inspiration from two of my favourite Blogs. Poplicious and Disco Delivery both currently feature the divine Amanda Lear. This goddess is truly in a league of her own. Amanda's life story plays like an Almodovar film on crack. There are prostitution rumours, reputed sex changes, celebrity lovers and an engagement as Salvador Dali's muse. Read a fantastic summary of Amanda's amazing life here. I particularly love this excerpt about Amanda's run in with Claudia Schiffer:

A Hollywood movie producer had optioned Lear's book My Life With Dali and wanted Schiffer to play Lear. "I ran into Claudia at a restaurant," Lear recalls. "She said, 'I love your book! Who wrote it for you?' I said, 'I did, darling. Who read it to you?' So that was the end of that. They never made the movie."

Amanda's fabulous career has spanned 4 decades. I love Miss Lear's superb disco albums but I'm also rather partial to her recent forays into dance music. I'd like write something coherent about Amanda when I'm not high on painkillers, so I've decided to post Amanda's tragic 2005 cover of "Copacabana". Amanda obviously put no effort into recording it, so I'm hoping no one will mind if I put minimal effort into reviewing it! "Copacabana" originally appeared on Amanda's 2005 best of "Forever Glam" and it's representative of the fabulously camp crap that she has been releasing lately - spoken vocals, hilarious production and interludes in French. You'll either love it or hate it. I fall squarely into the former category.

You can purchase "Forever Glam" from Amazon UK and Amazon Germany. Make sure to check out Amanda's website. I'm off now to see if Stephanie takes away Brooke's children!Source URL: https://popmusicrecords.blogspot.com/search/label/Crap%20Covers

Insomnia's Fabulous Hatchet Job

If you thought the Bliss cover of "American Pie" was rubbish, then hold on to your hair extensions for Insomnia! This sublimely tragic Australian duo launched their career with an astonishingly bad dance interpretation of "Fame" in the late 90s. Not surprisingly, it flopped and Insomnia were never heard of again. Well, one half of Insomnia at least. Pop fans may recognise Kellie Hoggart in the picture below. For the uninitiated, Kellie was a member of the 90s girlband, Teen Queens, and now performs to snotty nosed children around the globe as a member of Hi-5. I hope Kellie looks back on her days as the front woman of Insomnia with great pride. Their one and only flop, "Fame", is a four minute musical trainwreck of the highest order. "Fame" has all the ingredients of a pop trash classic - tacky beats, thin vocals and dated production. The cheesy record scratching and manic keyboards never fail to make me laugh. As much as I enjoy the music, the thing I love most about Insomnia's "Fame" is the fact that it's such a relic of its time. You just know that a small army of Chupa Chup munching disco dollies waved their glow sticks to this stunning anthem. Give "Fame" a spin and re-live your glory days. Just don't wear that shiteous lime green number you've been hiding in the back of your wardrobe. It was wrong - even then!

Many thanks to Steen for reminding me of this masterpiece and sending me a copy! How funny is the Star Wars inspired artwork!

Madonna Is An Old Thief!

Oh yes, I went there! Madonna is a thief and I have irrefutable proof! And I'm not talking about the uncanny similarity between Oldfrapp's shiteous "The Beat Goes On" and every second song on Nelly Furtado's "Loose" album. Rather, I'm referring to a truly craptastic Australian act called Bliss, who lovingly crafted a mind-boggling dance cover of "American Pie" in 1997 - three years before Madonna unleashed her own tragic rendition upon the world. I have no doubt that Madge has nothing better to do in her free time than listen to flops by unknown Australian dance acts and decided to steal the idea for herself.

While Madonna's version continues to feature on worst cover version countdowns, the Bliss version is a lost classic. As far as I'm concerned, if you're going to destroy a classic - you might as well totally fucking tear it apart and piss all over it. And believe me, Bliss leave no stone unturned in their destruction of Don McLean's anthem. The cheesy keyboards and atrocious rapping will warm the heart of any self-respecting pop trash addict!

So what became of Bliss? I suspect that Madge had them killed to hide her deceit. Or perhaps they just went back to working at McDonald's. It's impossible to tell because there is literally no information about Bliss anywhere on the internet. I can't even confirm if the song was ever officially released. I do know, however, that Bliss had some wicked style (check out their sublime outfits!) and knew how to cover a classic. If anyone knows more about this fabulously untalented duo, please let me know!

A big thank you to Steen for sending me this lost gem. Girlfriend, we are totally on the same wavelength!

The Chief's Fisting Anthem

I guess I should be ashamed of liking Paul "The Chief" Harragon's craptastic cover of Spandau Ballet's "Gold" but I'm not. This kind of fabulous rubbish only comes along once every couple of years, so I'm savouring each glorious second of it. The song is pretty abysmal but it's better than I expected from an ex-footballer/host of Channel 9's Footy Show. The standard version is so bad it's good but I seriously love the fagtastic dance mixes on the CD single! Mike Felks, who recently remixed some tracks for Slinkee Minx, has transformed The Chief into a Hi-NRG dancefloor diva! The addition of the lyric "if you've got a hand and a fist, you're indestructible" ups the gay factor to an unprecedented level. The bizarre lyrics apparently relate to Paul's trademark hand gesture but all those fist references mean something else entirely in this part of town. Sit back and enjoy the year's first fisting anthem!

You can purchase this future darkroom classic from Chaos, Sanity and iTunes. Make sure to check out the glamorous video clip. Nothing gets me going like a butch footballer wearing mascara!Source URL: https://popmusicrecords.blogspot.com/search/label/Crap%20Covers

Bottom Of The Barrel?

A novelty song by an ex-"Big Brother" contestant, whose lasting legacy was her ability to jiggle her flabby buttocks, may be construed by some as scraping the bottom of the musical barrel. Well, I really couldn't give a fuck when the bottom of the barrel sounds this good! Sara-Marie Fedele might be best remembered for her "erotic" bum dancing or possibly for having a breast lift on national television but these stunning accomplishments pale in significance to her contribution to the Australian music industry.

Sara-Marie featured on the first season of Australian "Big Brother" in 2001 and developed a cult following for her outrageous behaviour. When she was finally evicted from the house, some bright spark threw a record contract her way - despite Sara's complete and utter lack of musical talent. The resulting single, a dance cover of the Pointer Sisters' classic "I'm So Excited", should have been unbearably awful. The single version, which includes Sara-Marie calling out "bum dance" instructions, was terrible in a memorable sort of way. However, the "bum dance" free mix that I have uploaded is a trashtastic classic. In fact, listening to the song now, I can't help feeling that Sara missed her calling.

Sadly, Sara-Marie's trash classic is not available on iTunes. It might be worth keeping an eye on Australian Ebay for a physical copy.Source URL: https://popmusicrecords.blogspot.com/search/label/Crap%20Covers

Pop Trash Heaven

The Jacob Sisters' cover of "Your Disco Needs You" makes me want to delete Pop Trash Addicts and open a new Blog about naked gardening or one of my other hobbies. For this recording is surely the holy grail of pop trash.

The wonderfully glamorous Jacob Sisters have previously appeared on Pop Trash Addicts with their German language cover of "Stop! In The Name Of Love" from the 1960s. It is quite astonishing that the "girls" are still churning out craptastic cover versions of popular hits more than 40 years later. In fact, the history of The Jacob Sisters is very intriguing. Hannelore, Rosi, Johanna and Eva Jacob defected from East Germany in 1959 and quickly became singing stars in the West after acquiring four toy poodles as their trademark. In the early days, The Jacob Sisters concentrated on traditional German music before being discovered and taken to America to perform in New York and Las Vegas. It was there that they broadened their repertoire and started covering English and other foreign language hits in German. The ladies even made a highly acclaimed film in 1971 called "Quartett im Bett" ("Quartet In Bed") - which sounds a bit raunchy to me! These sexy goddesses then jumped on the Neue Deutsche Welle bandwagon in the 80s and embraced dance music in the 90s. I guess the only thing left for these living legends to do in the new millennium was to cover Kylie!

The Jacob Sisters' interpretation of "Your Disco Needs You" defies description. I'm convinced the ladies have no idea what the hell they are singing and the poor pronunciation only makes the song more bewildering. Kylie must be proud! You can find this trashtastic gem and 19 other slices of Jacob Sisters' magic on their greatest hits compilation "50 Jahre Die Jacob Sisters", available from German Amazon. Many thanks to Magical Froggy for his stunning "Your Disco Needs You" mock cover.

Craptastic Covers Vol 2 - Motown Re-Visited

There are few things as enjoyable as a craptastic cover version of a classic song. As far as I'm concerned, the more inappropriate the interpretation, the better! I posted a collection of wonderfully tragic Supremes covers a couple of weeks ago and I thought I would continue the Motown theme with three intriguing interpretations of "I Can't Help Myself". I elaborated on the pitiful circumstances behind La Toya's appalling yet irresistible album of Motown classics in my last post. Toy Toy's take on "I Can't Help Myself" was only single released from that album. I am told it sold about five copies to deaf people in Germany. The song is as terrible as everything else on the album but as a slice of ridiculous pop, you will be hard pushed to find something that matches La Toya's incredibly disinterested, Euro-house interpretation of The Four Tops' classic. I love it!

I devoted a post to the Teen Queens late last year. In short, the Teen Queens were a successful 90s Australian girlband who specialised in covers of hits from the 1960s. The girls not only covered old classics but continued with the vintage theme for their outfits and videos. The fabulous bitches look like they have just raided Gidget's wardrobe. "I Can't Help Myself" was one of the Teen Queens' final singles before they parted ways. The song is quite faithful to the original, perhaps a little too faithful.

I am completely disgusted with myself that this is the first appearance of the inimitable Dolly Parton on Pop Trash Addicts. I worship the ground that Dolly totters across in her sky high stilettos. My mother is a huge Dolly fan and I grew up listening to the sweet sounds of "Coat Of Many Colours", "Jolene" and "Here You Come Again". One of the fun rarities in Dolly's vast catalogue of music is her album of 60s cover versions, "The Great Pretender". The album is unusually hit and miss by Dolly's lofty standards but let's be honest. The woman could sing the NaTRASHa Bedingfield songbook and make it bearable. Dolly's version of "I Can't Help Myself" almost sounds like a demo, such is the minimalism of the production. I have the feeling that Dolly was thinking about more important matters like world peace or getting her nails done when she recorded this. Nevertheless, it is Dolly and it is therefore monumentally fabulous.

Stop In The Name Of Love - German Style!

I recently posted a selection of wonderfully tragic Motown cover versions by the likes of La Toya Jackson, Sinitta and Nicki French. I thought I had well and truly scraped the bottom of the musical barrel, that is until I stumbled across the Jacob Sisters' fabulously awful German rendition of "Stop! In The Name of Love" from 1965 on the truly sublime Germans Under Cover. The German version, "Was Hab' Ich Dir Getan?" - literally, "What Have I Done To You?" - is bizarrely translated and poorly produced, but still rather wonderful to my ears!

Nevertheless, the Jacob Sisters' version would probably have remained nothing more than a sweet curiosity if I hadn't decided to research the "girls" further and discovered that they are still performing today and have even continued with their ultra-camp gimmick of taking to the stage with four pampered toy poodles in tow. Have I also mentioned that they have been known to dress up as giant hampsters?! The Jacob sisters may be demented and slightly senile but they are clearly all kinds of fabulous! I promise to make a post dedicated to the Jacob Sisters' recent output in the near future.

Covers Vol. 1 - Trash Icons Destroy Motown

Firstly, just a quick note to let you all know that I have uploaded new material to Dannii's Dirty Box, including a stunning live track from "Notre Dame de Paris". Back to my post on craptastic cover versions!

Over the past few months I have posted my fair share of tragic cover versions on Pop Trash Addicts and I have decided to make cringe-worthy covers a recurring feature. Nothing is quite as fulfilling as listening to a musical car crash and today, I'm featuring three mind-boggling interpretations of The Supremes' classic "Stop In The Name Of Love" by three of the most fabulous women ever to have graced a recording studio.

    La Toya Jackson

Toy Toy's rendition of "Stop In The Name Of Love" is my favourite as it is by far the most ludicrous. To put the song in context, it was recorded at the absolute nadir of La Toya's career just before she escaped from her abusive ex-husband, Jack Gordon. In the mid 90s, Jack decided to cash in on the Jackson name (yet again) by getting La Toya to sing an album of Motown covers. The resulting album is possibly the worst recording ever captured on record. La Toya was drugged out of her mind and recorded the album in a Danish basement in a couple of days. The whole operation was so spectacularly cheap that most of the songs were simply released in their original demo format with no further production. The only bright spot on the entire album is "Stop In The Name Of Love", which begins as a rather traditional cover (despite La Toya sounding semi-conscious) and then suddenly introduces a Euro-house interlude half way through. It's awful but I love it and it is definitely the only version of a Supremes classic to have a nude picture sleeve - see above!

    Sinitta

I'm ashamed to say that this is the very first appearance for Sinitta on Pop Trash Addicts. Sinitta's pop legacy is assured, having produced some of the best singles of 80s with the help of Stock/Aiken/Waterman. Before purchasing Sinitta's "The Supreme E.P.", I thought a selection of Motown covers would suit her wonderfully. Unfortunately, I was wrong. I have no idea how you can manage to remove the melody from something as perfect as "Stop In The Name Of Love". If any song is idiot proof, then surely this is it. La Toya managed to get through the song with some of her dignity intact - and she wasn't even conscious when she recorded it! Sinitta's version is appalling. She slows the song down and plays around with the phrasing with disastrous results. However, this is a must for Sinitta fans!

    Nicki French

Nicki is the queen of tragic Hi-NRG dance cover versions and her take on "Stop In The Name Of Love" is inspired. The song is one of two Japanese bonus tracks on Nicki's "Secrets" album and I dare say, if they had have been released internationally, Nicki's career might be in a much better state. In fact, I prefer Nicki's "Stop In The Name Of Love" to her seminal "Total Eclipse Of The Heart". It's pure cheese but it works brilliantly. Nicki sounds fabulous and the Hi-NRG backing track works a treat. It's about time that Nicki unleashed a new album for her tens of adoring fans.Source URL: https://popmusicrecords.blogspot.com/search/label/Crap%20Covers
